Family and marriage counselling usually go hand in hand. A marriage usually consists of a family and a family needs parents who are married to stay together. However not everything is perfect and some families can get issues due to parents and their marriage problems. Or sometimes marriage counseling is needed for parents who can’t control their children who stress them out and can sometimes lead to parental dispute and can end up in a divorce.
Either way there is always a need for more family and marriage counseling students and if you’re thinking about studying to become a family counselor or a marriage counselor than you’ll need to know something’s about the degree.
There ultimate course is the Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling / Therapy. This course is aimed at preparing students to understand systemic perspective with individuals, families and couples mental health conditions. Throughout this course you’ll be required to have around 100 hours client supervised contact hours as well as 500 hours of unsupervised client contact. You may also be required to have clinical supervision which consist of listening to audiotapes, watching video tapes and also live observations.
To be a fully qualified family and marriage counseling therapist you’ll need to have some titles such as MFT, LCSW, and PhD under you name.
MFT is a Marriage and Family Therapist degree in psychology, counseling and or related fields. This role usually involves the mental side of counseling
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) usually a masters in social work degree. This is similar to what a MFT would practice. Most people in similar course work with similar patients. Although training and therapy are similar this course is more focused about social and government systems
PhD or Psy.D, Doctoral degree in psychology specialised in clinical psychology or counseling. A person with this degree would practice clinical psychology or counseling with a psychologist’s license.
